In and around Durango, there are many herds of deer and elk that can destroy gardens overnight. It is important to be observant and aware of their presence to prevent damage to your property. From late fall to early spring, it is important to put fencing up around gardens, shrubs, and small trees. When constructing deer and elk fencing, one should use wire that is at least 6 ft high because shorter fences allow the animals to lean or jump over. In larger areas, one will need to secure the fence with t-post or put up a more permanent fence. This is even more important when snow fall is greater then normal. Deer and elk have a tenancy to rub there rack on small immature trees which can lead to tree death.
